Guilt
An emotion that arises from feeling you've harmed someone or broken a value.
Why do I feel this way?
Guilt appears when you recognize that your actions (or inactions) may have hurt someone else or gone against your values.
It signals that you care about others, about integrity, about being better.
Guilt invites repair, not punishment.
How to change or channel it
- Separate healthy guilt (real harm) from toxic guilt (over responsibility).
- Make amends where possible, honesty rebuilds trust.
- Forgive yourself once you've learned and acted.
- Channel guilt into a promise: "Next time, I will choose differently."

Living with this feeling
Original Lantern Project guidance inspired by this topic. This section is not copied from the source book.
Cameron notices guilt after an experience that is difficult to put into words. Instead of judging the feeling or forcing it away, Cameron names what is present and chooses one supportive practice: separate healthy guilt (real harm) from toxic guilt (over responsibility).. The feeling may still be there, but it is no longer the only voice directing the moment. Cameron has created enough space to choose what comes next with greater care.
“I can acknowledge guilt without letting it define every part of me. I can listen to what it may be showing me and choose one caring next step.”
What might guilt be asking me to notice, protect, accept, express, or change today?
