Why Do I Feel This Way... And How To Change It
Hopelessness
An emotion that arises from believing change is impossible.
Why do I feel this way?
What does hopelessness mean?
Hopelessness sets in when you perceive no path forward, when repeated efforts, losses or pain cloud your ability to imagine improvement.
It's the emotional shutdown after prolonged struggle.
Hopelessness asks: "Why try?" but even asking means part of you still hopes.
How to change or channel it
What can help right now?
- Shrink the future and focus only on today.
- Seek small proofs that change is still possible.
- Allow yourself to mourn losses fully without judgment.
- Rebuild hope through action, not just thought.
A little more light
Living with this feeling
Jamie has stopped opening the curtains because morning feels like another demand. Friends keep offering plans that sound impossibly far away. Today, the only reachable action is replying to one message with the truth: ‘I’m not okay and I need help getting through today.’ The response comes with no speech, just: ‘I’m coming over. You don’t need to clean.’ Hopelessness says there is no door. Sometimes another person can hold it open until Jamie can see it.
Let hopelessness be information today. You are allowed to notice it without judging yourself or rushing it away.
If hopelessness returns this week, how would you like to meet it differently?
