Misunderstood
An emotion that arises from a lack of connection or accurate recognition.
Why do I feel this way?
Feeling misunderstood happens when others don't see, hear or acknowledge your real experiences, intentions or identity.
It can lead to isolation and frustration, but it also highlights your need for authentic connection.
How to change or channel it
- Clarify your needs or feelings with simple direct language.
- Seek out people or spaces where you're more likely to be understood.
- Offer yourself the understanding you seek, self compassion first.
- Accept that not everyone is able or willing to understand.

Living with this feeling
Original Lantern Project guidance inspired by this topic. This section is not copied from the source book.
Avery notices misunderstood after a day when connection has felt distant. Instead of judging the feeling or forcing it away, Avery names what is present and chooses one supportive practice: clarify your needs or feelings with simple direct language.. The feeling may still be there, but it is no longer the only voice directing the moment. Avery has created enough space to choose what comes next with greater care.
“I can acknowledge misunderstood without letting it define every part of me. I can listen to what it may be showing me and choose one caring next step.”
What might misunderstood be asking me to notice, protect, accept, express, or change today?
