Anguish
An emotion that arises from deep emotional or existential pain.
Why do I feel this way?
Anguish surfaces when loss, betrayal, meaninglessness, or overwhelming change tear at your inner world.
It's sorrow is so heavy that it may feel physical.
Anguish can show how much something mattered.
How to change or channel it
- Allow yourself to feel it fully, don't rush to numb it.
- Express the depth of the feeling through words, movement, or creation.
- Seek spaces (safe people, support, therapy) where your pain is witnessed.
- Trust that anguish evolves, it will not stay as it is forever.

Living with this feeling
Original Lantern Project guidance inspired by this topic. This section is not copied from the source book.
Casey notices anguish while moving through a difficult week. Instead of judging the feeling or forcing it away, Casey names what is present and chooses one supportive practice: allow yourself to feel it fully, don't rush to numb it.. The feeling may still be there, but it is no longer the only voice directing the moment. Casey has created enough space to choose what comes next with greater care.
“I can acknowledge anguish without letting it define every part of me. I can listen to what it may be showing me and choose one caring next step.”
What might anguish be asking me to notice, protect, accept, express, or change today?
